Episode 7 – A Familiar Face
ALBERT is driving to the house. He’s laughing jubilantly and singing along to opera on the radio.
ALBERT:
Tonight’s the night! Eustace, if you could see me now.
Haha, WOO!
Kurt, my boy, just crossin’ some T’s and dottin’ some I’s.
(laughing)
Do you mind if I come in?
**********
KURT is shouting while smashing and destroying everything he can find in the house.
KURT:
You fucking piece of shit! What the fuck did I think I was gonna find here. Mom was right, I never should’ve come.
God, what a fucking idiot! She ran away and I come back? Fuck was I thinking! You depraved, psychotic fuck! This is what you planned to leave to me? This is no fucking inheritance! This is a fucking crime scene!
You’re better off in the ground! I wish I’d put you there myself! I’m gonna tear this house down and erase every memory of you!
**********
ALBERT is singing along to more opera. He does not know the words. He laughs to himself.
ALBERT:
Almost there. Almost there. I knew it would be me. Where so many failed, I knew it would be me! Eustace, you didn’t deserve it!
Tonight’s the night.
ALBERT takes a few deep breaths as he pulls into the driveway. He sees KURT breaking the porch railing.
ALBERT:
Oh Kurt, what are you doing?
The poor boy’s lost it. It’s almost too easy.
(deep breath)
Okay. Okay Albert. Okay Albert.
He gets out of the car. KURT doesn’t stop breaking things.
KURT:
(yelling from a distance)
Did you get stuck in traffic?
ALBERT:
Sorry about the wait, Kurt. I… got held up. Had a couple things I had to do. May I ask what you’re doing?
KURT:
Gathering. Wood.
ALBERT:
Huh. It does kind of look like you’re using my shovel to destroy your inheritance.
KURT:
Inheritance?
KURT begins walking toward ALBERT.
KURT:
Yeah. Let’s. Talk. About. My. Inheritance.
ALBERT:
Kurt. Okay. Let’s, let’s just slow it down.
KURT:
No!
ALBERT:
Let’s just slow it down for a second.
ALBERT is now backing up as KURT keeps aggressively walking closer to him.
KURT:
It’s about time you showed up.
ALBERT:
Kurt. Kurt, I’m here now.
KURT:
Why don’t you tell me about my inheritance?
ALBERT:
I’ll tell you whatever you want to know, but I need you to calm down.
KURT:
I know more than enough! I know about Caroline! My half-brother!
ALBERT:
Half-brother?
KURT:
The question is, what do you know?
ALBERT:
Kurt, you and your mother are the only family he ever talked about.
KURT:
Oh spare me your apologetic bullshit!
ALBERT:
Kurt, no one— no one else was mentioned in the will.
KURT:
What I want to know is what it had do to with this!
KURT pulls out the knife and threatens ALBERT. There is a tense silence.
ALBERT:
(softly)
Okay, Kurt. You have a knife to my throat. I can smell the alcohol on your breath. I know you don’t want to hurt anyone.
KURT lowers the knife and backs down.
KURT:
I’m sorry. I… I saw Caroline’s sonogram… And I saw that tape.
ALBERT:
Kurt? Kurt, everything’s gonna be okay. Why don’t you show me what you’re talking about. Maybe I can help.
KURT:
I don’t think I can watch that again.
ALBERT:
It’s okay, Kurt. Let’s just, let’s just go inside.
KURT takes a deep breath. They start walking to the house.
KURT:
Okay. All right. But, you, you just don’t understand.
ALBERT:
Don’t worry, Kurt. Kurt.
KURT:
He’s got this journal that’s got…
ALBERT:
Don’t worry. It’s okay, Kurt.
KURT:
Filled with ramblings about magic.
ALBERT:
I understand.
KURT:
Doesn’t.. doesn’t make any sense.
ALBERT:
It’ll be okay, Kurt.
KURT:
You’ll see. You’ll see.
They enter the house.
ALBERT:
I see you’ve been doin’ some redecorating.
KURT:
I don’t, I just didn’t know…
ALBERT:
Sorry. But, probably cleaner than how he left it.
KURT:
I don’t know…
ALBERT:
Well just, show me what’s wrong, Kurt. Why don’t you show me what you’re talking about.
KURT:
It’s.. it’s right here. The tape. I’ll show you, it’s right here.
ALBERT:
Okay.
KURT kneels down at the VCR to play the tape. He presses play but it’s just static. He keeps playing with it, but it has stopped working.
KURT:
Come on. Come on.
ALBERT:
Kurt? Are you sure everything’s okay? It’s just static.
KURT:
It was right here. It was right here on the tape. I saw it.
ALBERT:
I believe you.
KURT:
There was dad! There was Caroline! And there was–
ALBERT runs at KURT and knocks him out with a blackjack.
ALBERT:
Sentimental bastard. I should’ve known he’d kept the tape.
Not that it matters anymore.
ALBERT begins dragging KURT’s unconscious body toward the door.
ALBERT:
(breathing heavily)
So much dead weight.
This body’s getting too old for this.
Good thing I won’t need it much longer.
